INTERNATIONAL DRIVING PERMIT (IDP)

What is IDP?

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is a document that allows you to drive motor vehicles in countries that recognise it, like Japan. It is issued by an authorised issuing body following the format of the 1949 Geneva Convention, and must be accompanied by a valid driving licence. The IDP is valid for one year from the date of issue and cannot be renewed.

How to apply for an IDP?

You must apply for the IDP from an authorised issuing body in the country that issued your driving licence.

In Singapore, you need to apply at the Automobile Association of Singapore.

What you need:

  • Singapore Driving Licence

  • NRIC/FIN

  • Passport-sized photo taken within the last 2 years (Photo can be taken on the spot if you apply in person)

  • Application fee of $20

Apply online via the Automobile Association website, or directly at the Automobile Association. Online application takes about 7 working days and requires extra charges for local courier service, while walk-in application takes about an hour.
